Possession - Jessica Hawkins Review

This is currently free on Amazon UK for kindle!

Lola Winters doesn’t think she can escape her life as a waitress—until she receives a shocking proposition from a sexy stranger. Wealthy businessman Beau Olivier wants Lola for a night, and in order to get her, he’s willing to make her dreams come true.

But Beau’s conditions are explicit. From sunset to sunrise, Lola must submit all of herself to him—body, mind, and soul. Because nothing is more important to Beau than maintaining control...especially over his possessions.

Sometimes, though, things don’t go according to plan. What if one night isn't enough? What if come sunrise, Beau isn’t ready to say goodbye?

This is my first Jessica Hawkins book but this has certainly set the bar high and I’m definitely going to be picking up the rest of this series and her other books!

First off we have Johnny and Lola who have been together for nine years and are running a bar, Hey Joe, together but recently the bar has been pulling in less and less customers and the owner is think of selling up. Johnny has always wanted to run his own bar however he doesn’t have anywhere near enough money saved up to put an offer in for Hey Joe and that’s where Beau and his offer comes into play. It’s an intriguing situation to be in; have the money to start a new life, or a new career just for spending the night with one man.

The pace of this book was just fantastic; there wasn’t too long spent on a certain aspect of the plot such as the decision making and the actual night itself which meant that at no point was I bored in reading this! One of the best things about this ploy was that Hawkins drew the character development out over the book and then revealed them at the perfect times. It kept you guessing and wanting to read more to get to know the characters better and obviously also follow the plot point. I also thought I knew how it was going to end but I was pleasantly surprise when it ended differently and I'm keen to see how this plays out in the second book!

I’ve seen a lot of people throw around the term cheating in this and yes, whilst Lola might be sleeping with another man her partner knows about it and even condones it to get the money they need. Yes, Lola and Johnny are together and are in a faithful relationship but Johnny knew what was happening when he didn’t stop Lola going as Beau had mentioned that he would completely own her for one night and made her sign a wavier on his parental rights if Lola got pregnant. Nevertheless, if cheating partners aren’t for you then it’s probably best to stay away from this book!

You want to hate Beau; he’s meant to be the arrogant, handsome has-it-all business man who is all about tailored suits and makes his millions and looks down on people like Lola and Johnny because he’s better than them. But he’s not and despite really wanting to hate him I just couldn’t! He was sweet and lovely and yes he was arrogant and domineering in some places about getting what he wanted and obviously slightly cocky for going after Lola when she has a partner but it just added to his character and he was actually really lovely.
I really enjoyed this and will definitely be picking up the next one! (Hopefully sometime soon!)
